The Greater Rhea, Rhea americana, lives on the pampas, and open woodlands in the southeastern part of South America. It stands about five feet tall and weighs about 50 lbs, making it the largest American bird. It is in the same family with the Ostrich, the Kiwi, and the Emu, but is only about half the size of an Ostrich. It is a flightless omnivore. This orphan Rhea frequented the grounds of our hotel where it was fed. |
